| Hello, this thread is for all stepping questions, concerns, ideas, and everything else.
Some of the problems I've noticed in the reviews are errors made in stepping, consistency problems, or some that need a coach. Asking a stepartist personally can be demanding on the stepartist (not saying this for all stepartists, but good artists like AJ, are quite busy sometimes).
If anyone has a question about how they should step something or may need help reviewing their file, share it here!
Stepartists can post tips and whatnot as they please or may answer questions that have been posted!
Please do not offend anyone's ideas or theories how they step or answer things. Simply reply adding to their idea or telling an alternative!
Thank you!
Stepping Tips 101.
List goes here. | |

| Would be more than be happy to help out on this thread!
Also One biggie rule-Never rush a file, otherwise you will A:Miss out lots of notes and B: will be no where as good at what it could be
Plus ill try not to offend anyone, except if you make a dump file. lol .(oj)

| A nice tip is when you are stepping particular parts in songs, hit escape, song options, and lower the rate to approximately 0.4-0.6x. Another good tip when lowering the rate to hear exactly where each note lies, use the assist tick (hit F4). This will play a little tick whenever an arrow you placed is played.
Two lil tips :3 | |

| use multiple charts to layer in sounds
standard - step audible sounds heavy - add additional sounds oni - every possible sound

| I'm a little iffy about this thread. It could lead to others picking up on bad habits of other stepartists. I'm not trying to sound like a bitch or anything don't take it that way. I just know that listening to the wrong people can do more harm than good. I know some of the more experienced people may be busy at times but they are usually willing to take a little time to talk about stepping. Maybe we can start a specific day/time where we can have like stepping 101 in chat and people can ask questions/get advise from some of the people that have been doing it for a while now.
Like I agree use multiple charts to layer I do it too but "every possible sound" is where I disagree. Now it depends on the song but doing that could lead to the file basically turning into a dump or just having a lot of awkward patterns. You need to be careful of what you layer in where on a chart.
The slowdown method. I have a habit of slowing music down too which in some cases is a good thing but in others from what AJ has been telling me can be bad cause you could end up hearing (ghost sounds)

Plus ill try not to offend anyone, except if you make a dump file. lol .(oj) Yet, most of your files seem to do that? You tend to miss sounds and use inconsistent layering on a good majority of your files. - ichliebekase wrote:

Two lil tips :3 While slowing down the song is good, slowing the song down too much adds more 'clipping' to the audio, due to the time-stretching of each individual sample in a song. Because of this, it's possible to hear little clicks/pops that really wouldn't be there if you were to play it on somewhere between 0.8 - 1.0. - ♫♪ wrote:

This is true for me too... When there's not alot of noises to try and hear I would say using .5x is OK, but generally I'll sit at .8x if I can't discern the pattern at normal speed.

Biggest tip ever. It's not just about interest though, you have to enjoy it. If you don't enjoy the song you're stepping, you won't end up with a chart you're proud to say is yours.

At times i stepped the song purely because the song would make for an interesting chart and for the most part I didn't like the song either (and yes the file was fun). At times when i tried to step a song i liked, it failed.

| I'd like to uh contribute to this thread, but I have noo clue what to say, haha.
One thing I do is that when there are chords that are far apart, I turn the rate up and step those first. It's easier to hear the relative pitches of the chords at the faster rate, and then you can make sure the chords remain pitch-relevant while you put the melody on top of it.
Using a lower rate is good for finding rhythms (like the difference between 3/32 and 1/12). If you hear extra notes and insert them, going back 1.0x to make the pattern flow better shouldn't be difficult.
I always use 0.1x rate and 8.0 xmod to finalize the offset. That should be done before tweaking the BPM, because you may make a BPM change that fixes your incorrect offset, and then... yeah. Notes should be placed close to where they should be on a higher rate so you can make sure you're putting the note to the right sound at 0.1x. You have to watch out for notes with long attacks with that. Like stepping to voice gets a little weird.
Using assist tick at a slow rate is a pain, 'cause you have to start your selection three beats before to hear the tick, but it is much more reliable than human accuracy...
With FFR's lower frame rate and stuff, I know there's some value of negligibility in the accuracy of an arrow, so I guess you don't have to be exact if you're just making an FFR file... but uh. Yeah.
I know I used to think "sound+sound=jump!", and you get weirdo layering with that, 'cause sounds that are louder but alone won't have a jump when two soft sounds together will... yeah. Sometimes it's nice to just put jumps on certain sounds, like chords or whatever.
blah blah blah, what am I saying.

| This is also a "help me with this one chart" thread, right? At the risk of stepping an over-popular song I hadn't heard of... (keyboard, spread): IOSYS - OverdriveThe part I'd like some help with is the ending. I want to keep the stream, even though it's 200 bpm, and I don't want the difficulty to be an FFR 10 because of it--this isn't Vertex Beta. I want the tough parts to be deceptively easy. Makes you think, "oh no, lots of arrows!... whoa, I combo'd that." The ending is the part I have the most trouble with, and since I'm okay hitting rest of the song, I thought I should tone it down a bit. I haven't played much above a 9, so I'm not a good judge of difficulty on this. | |

| The simplest way to put it is to make easy patterns. The ones that flow. The ending can be 200 bpm stream as an aspect of the "climax theory". Utilize patterns like VB (not including the 121 343 stuff as that can be awkward and throw off some people). | |
